THE JOURNEY OF THE BOOK
The Journey of the Book is a workshop activity for kindergarten and primary school children, launched based on an idea and on the initiative of Gutenberg Publishing & Printing House and Bookstore. By revealing the smallest details, this presents the way in which a book is born, it is made and how it reaches its readers. For this purpose, the workspaces of the Gutenberg staff – the publishing house, the printing house and the bookstores – are converted for the purposes of the workshop activities every year. Consequently, children can become authors, illustrators, typographer apprentices and bookstore customers themselves, gaining an insight into the world of the books gradually, as active participants in the entire process.
These programs engage organised groups – sometimes even up to five hundred children –, being guided through each hall of the book house, from the literary editor and the graphic designer through the type-form manufacturers and draft printers to the bindery and the warehouse, including a visit to the bookstore as well. Then we help them manufacture their own volumes based on their own ideas, texts and drawings, in as many copies printed, as how many children have made The Journey of the Book. The whole process is recorded in a specific occasional publication entitled Workshop Diary.
